Assistant Director’s Message: Find something beautiful today

Before we dig into the happenings around the Gardens, a quick reminder that our Spring Plant Sale is coming up April 17th and 18th, and the online pre-orders are going fast.  While making my choices for the sale offerings this year, I endeavored to present a carefully curated list of beautiful plants that are also well suited to our area.  I am especially excited about the edibles selection with peach and nectarine varieties developed right here at UF, among many other delicious and productive choices.  If you haven’t placed your order yet, or made your plans to attend the two-day sale, don’t miss out. Not only will you enhance the beauty of your home, and make yourself happier and healthier, you will be supporting Wilmot Botanical Gardens. Everyone needs more plants in their life!

Spring is known as the season of rebirth and renewal.  We ‘Plant People’ have certainly had an interesting winter, book-ended by a notable early November frost and an historic February freeze.  I held my breath waiting for signs of regrowth and I’m happy to say the wait has been worth it.  Throughout the Gardens, specimens that had been damaged are coming back rapidly.

While we were busy tidying up, some beautiful bloomers were either well underway or planning their triumphant return to cheer us on.  It has been hard to beat the azaleas (Rhododendron spp.) this year, and Blue Flag Iris (Iris versicolor) have been popping up day by day like little fireworks.  It’s not just the plants that are getting a move on; we are reminded that Wilmot Botanical Gardens is also a haven for wildlife.  In a case of perfect timing, just as our native White Milkweed (Asclepias perennis) were refoliating, some lovely Monarch butterfly larvae emerged to devour the tender new leaves as fast as they could grow.  Meanwhile, a raucous band of what I believe to be Yellow-rumped Warblers swooped and flitted overhead.  If there are any bird experts out there, please correct me if I am mistaken in my potential ID.  I fear I’m becoming a ‘bird nerd’ if there is such a thing.

All of this brings me back round to the cycle of the seasons, the rebirth and renewal.  It seems everywhere I look the signs of spring are here.  The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the plants are springing forth.  Come take advantage of this wonderful resource, right on your doorstep.  Bring your lunch, take a stroll, book a group tour; I look forward to seeing you in the Gardens soon, and as always,
